20 Practical Tips for Staying Safe

One of the ideas I talk about often is that your safety is ultimately your responsibility. We can't control everything that happens around us, but we can control many of the choices we make every day.

People sometimes ask me, "What does that actually look like in real life?"

The answer isn't complicated. It's about building good habits that reduce risk while still allowing you to enjoy life. None of these ideas are difficult, but together they can make a real difference.

I'll also be honest. I don't follow every one of these guidelines 100 percent of the time. When I was younger, I accepted more risk, and sometimes I even went looking for adventure that carried more danger than it probably should have. As I've gotten older, my perspective has changed. I still love adventure, travel, and new experiences, but I work harder to manage the risks that come with them.

Each person has to decide where that balance is for themselves. My goal isn't to tell you how to live. It's to give you ideas that can help you enjoy as much of life as possible while staying as safe as possible.

When You're Out and About

Stay aware of your surroundings.
One of my favorite sayings is, "Keep your head out of your apps." I tell students in my live classes that spending too much time looking at your phone means you're not paying attention to what's happening around you. Situational awareness gives you time to avoid problems before they become emergencies.

Trust your instincts.
If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore that feeling. Leave. It's much better to be wrong and safe than right and injured.

Choose well-lit, populated areas.
Avoid isolated shortcuts, especially after dark. Sometimes the smartest route isn't the shortest one.

Carry a personal safety tool.
I recommend carrying something that gives you options if you ever have to defend yourself. I personally carry Reflex Protect Defensive Spray, which is one of the reasons I work with the company. Whatever you choose, learn how to use it before you need it.

Stay with others when possible.
There really is safety in numbers. If you're in an unfamiliar place, especially at night, being with other people can reduce your chances of becoming a target. College students should also take advantage of campus escort programs whenever they're available.

When You Travel

Research your destination.
A little planning before your trip can prevent a lot of problems. Learn about safe neighborhoods, transportation options, local customs, and areas you should avoid.

Don't stand out unnecessarily.
You don't have to pretend to be a local, but avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Flashy jewelry, expensive electronics, or being loud and obnoxious can make you more noticeable than you want to be.

Protect your valuables.
I like travel pants with zippered inside pockets because they help keep my wallet, passport, and phone secure. Anti-theft bags can also be helpful, especially in crowded tourist areas.

Keep copies of important documents.
Store digital copies of your passport, driver's license, and other important documents in secure cloud storage. Carry paper copies separately from the originals as well.

Know who to call.
Save local emergency numbers and know where the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate is located before you need them.

When You're Driving

Keep your vehicle maintained.
Regular maintenance helps prevent breakdowns and makes your vehicle safer. Before any long trip, check your tires, fluids, lights, and brakes.

Eliminate distractions.
Most people immediately think about texting, but distractions come in many forms. Passengers, pets, food, drinks, and constantly adjusting the radio all take your attention away from driving.

Keep your doors locked.
This simple habit can discourage thieves and make it more difficult for someone to enter your vehicle unexpectedly.

Don't tempt criminals.
Many crimes are crimes of opportunity. Don't leave purses, laptops, cameras, or other valuables sitting in plain view. Lock them in the trunk or take them with you.

Know where you're going.
Use GPS, but don't blindly follow it. Pay attention to your surroundings and always be aware of alternate routes if needed.

Keeping Your Home Safe

Make your home look protected.
Visible security cameras, alarm systems, or even security signs can discourage criminals from choosing your home.

Lock your doors and windows.
It sounds simple, but many burglaries happen because someone forgot to lock up.

Use light timers.
Timers on indoor and outdoor lights help create the appearance that someone is home when you're away.

Get to know your neighbors.
This is one of the biggest safety advantages many people overlook today. Good neighbors notice unusual activity, collect packages, and keep an eye on each other's homes. A couple of generations ago, this was common. Today it's something many neighborhoods have lost.

Think before posting on social media.
I generally recommend waiting until you return home before posting vacation photos. Broadcasting that you're away can let the wrong people know your house is empty.

Now I'll admit this is one guideline I don't always follow. Because of my work, I often share photos and updates while I'm traveling. The difference is that I also have trusted neighbors watching our home, along with other security measures in place. If you're going to break one of the "rules," make sure you've taken steps to reduce the additional risk.

Final Thoughts

Safety isn't about living in fear. It's about making smart choices that give you more freedom to enjoy life.

Will following these tips guarantee nothing bad ever happens? Of course not. There are no guarantees.

But good habits reduce unnecessary risk, and over time those small decisions add up.

You don't have to adopt every suggestion on this list overnight. Start with a few that make sense for your life, then build from there. Find the balance that works for you and your family.

That's really what Enjoy Life Safely is all about. Live your life. Take adventures. Explore the world. Just make smart choices along the way so you can keep enjoying all the experiences life has to offer.
