Little Adventures Close to Home
You don’t always need a plane ticket, a week off, or an elaborate itinerary to have a memorable adventure. Sometimes all it takes is setting aside a day and exploring a little closer to home.
This past Saturday, my wife and I loaded Rocky into the car and headed out from Missoula to enjoy the Mission Mountains, Flathead Lake, the fall colors, and whatever else caught our attention along the way. We had a few stops in mind, but we also left ourselves time to enjoy the day.
It turned out to be a wonderful reminder of how much there is to appreciate right in our own backyard.

A Beautiful First Stop Near Arlee
Our first stop was the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas near Arlee, Montana. My wife and I had visited a couple of times before, and it’s a beautiful place to walk around and take in the surroundings.
Unfortunately, as we suspected might be the case, dogs weren’t allowed in the garden. Since Rocky was part of our day’s adventure, we kept this visit short.
I went in and took a few pictures while my wife stayed outside the garden and took Rocky for a short walk around the parking area and a little way down the road. It was a beautiful day for photographs, and I was glad to have the chance to stop again.
Then we headed toward the lake and the other places where Rocky could get out and enjoy the experience with us.
That’s part of taking a day trip with a dog: being willing to adjust. One stop might be a quick visit, while another gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs and spend more time together.
Mountains, Lake Views, and Lunch Together
As we continued, we enjoyed views of the Mission Mountains, scenery around Flathead Lake, wildlife, and fall colors. We visited the dam near the lake and stopped at different parks where we could get out and walk around.
Those stops were part of what made the day enjoyable. There’s something different about getting out of the car, feeling the air, and taking time to look around. You notice things you would miss if you simply drove past.
For lunch, we picked up food at a restaurant in Polson and took it to a park beside the lake. That meant Rocky could be out with us instead of waiting in the car while we ate.
The weather was nice, the view was beautiful, and we got to enjoy our meal together. A simple lunch became one of the pleasures of the day because of where we were and who was with us.

What Have You Been Driving Past?
I enjoy bigger trips, too. Visiting other countries, seeing famous places, and attending special events can give us experiences we remember for years.
But there’s also value in looking around where you already live.
Sometimes familiarity makes us overlook things. We pass a turnoff and wonder where it leads. We see a park and think we’ll stop someday. We hear about a nearby attraction, but never quite make time to visit.
There may be places close to home that you haven’t discovered yet. And places you already know can offer a different experience in another season, with different company, or simply when you slow down enough to appreciate them.
You don’t have to wait for your next big vacation to enjoy a change of scenery.
Make Room for a Little Adventure
Choose somewhere nearby that interests you. It could be a park, a walking trail, a small town, a garden, or a scenic drive with a few places to stop.
Check the details that matter for your day. If you’re bringing a dog, look into where dogs are welcome. Consider the weather, bring what you need, and allow enough time to enjoy yourself without rushing from one stop to the next.
Then go.
Part of enjoying life safely is making room to enjoy life. Preparation and awareness help us get out and experience more of it.
Our Saturday gave us beautiful scenery, a few walks, a lakeside lunch, and time together with Rocky. We came home having spent a day enjoying things that were within reach all along.
